Artist feature of Snigdha Basak

I work mostly with abstract forms and usually it is a part of my spontaneous process of work. Particularly I am interested in the area of Appliqué and weaving on Fibre Sculpture is my integral part of my series of work. In this work of appliqué, I mostly used black and white colour to highlight the forms. I do black and white series as I considered that black and white are focusable. I had done a series of Black and white works because according to me Black is –Bold, expressive, elegance, liberty, solid, strong and powerful. Whereas, white to me is – Purity, spacious, sophistication and soft look. The grey colour is calm, quiet, neutral and composure. For a change in my work I use the colour gold mustard to create an impact of free, liberty. For more dimensions I used Textural cloths, silk screen printing style, sponge effects, towel fabric, thin sponge, different types of stitches, variety of nets, grip texture fabrics and cottons to give appliqué work a layers of layers style and creative interesting work.

I have always tried  to explore and projected my works in three –dimensional view.  So, in this series of Three-dimensional Fibre Sculpture these works are created involving textile process, where I make the base structure with iron and put thin iron strings into that structure for weaving inside it. After this process I weave this structure with various threads, such as wool, twisted cotton, thick strings, cotton threads and few twisted clothes.  As creating dimension   is    an important aspect in my work so for that I cover this fibre armature by stitching with embossed designs created with card boards etc. Making an artistic look in this long   fibre sculpture first I did screen printing of my designs on a plain fabric after that using thick cardboard of four to six layers cut cardboard papers as per my design. Then paste all those cardboard layers and wrap a plain white cloth and run stitch it according to the shape all over. After this process, I took the final screen-printed cloth and wrap that printed cloth on top of that white cloth as per the shape by applying button stitch from all sides. Then I put these fabric three d shapes on this fibre sculpture by applying button stitching.
